Have you ever watched someone you love make the same destructive choices over and over again?
Maybe it’s an adult child struggling with addiction.
Maybe it’s a spouse who refuses counseling.
Maybe it’s a friend trapped in a toxic relationship.
Maybe it’s a family member whose life seems to be unraveling while everyone around them scrambles to hold the pieces together.
You pray.
You worry.
You lose sleep.
You have the same conversations again and again.
You offer advice they don’t take.
You try to prevent consequences.
You step in to help.
And before long, you realize you’re carrying a burden so heavy that it is affecting your own peace, your own health, and your own relationship with God.
I’ve sat across from countless parents in counseling who are exhausted from trying to save their adult children.
Mothers who continue rescuing.
Fathers who keep paying bills.
Families who rearrange their entire lives around someone else’s dysfunction.
Not because they don’t love them.
But because they do.
And that’s what makes this so difficult.
Love can sometimes convince us that carrying another person’s responsibility is an act of compassion.
But what if it’s not?
What if some of the heaviest burdens we carry were never ours to hold?
What if helping isn’t always helping?
What if rescuing someone from the consequences of their choices is actually preventing the very thing God wants to use to bring them to repentance?
These are difficult questions.
But they’re exactly the questions God addresses in Ezekiel 33.
In this chapter, God introduces the role of the watchman and gives us one of the clearest biblical pictures of healthy responsibility, healthy boundaries, and the freedom that comes when we stop trying to do God’s job for Him.
Most people don’t walk around asking:
“What are biblical boundaries?”
What they’re actually asking is:
And underneath all of that is this question:
Where does my responsibility end… and where does theirs begin?
In Book of Ezekiel 33, God gives the prophet Ezekiel a powerful word picture.
A watchman stands on the wall of a city, looking for danger.
If an enemy approaches, the watchman’s job is simple:
Sound the alarm.
Warn the people.
That’s it.
Not force them to respond.
Not drag them to safety.
Not control their decisions.
Just:
See clearly.
Speak faithfully.
And God tells Ezekiel:
“I have made you a watchman.”
This passage reveals something that many of us have never been taught:
You ARE responsible to tell the truth.
You ARE NOT responsible to control the outcome.
Let that settle in.
Because this is where so many loving, sincere, compassionate people get stuck.
We move from:
Warning into –> Controlling
From:
Loving into –> Rescuing
From:
Responsibility into –> Ownership
I see this all the time in counseling.
A wife trying to manage her husband’s spiritual life.
A parent trying to prevent every consequence for an adult child.
A friend trying to fix someone caught in addiction.
And slowly, without realizing it, they begin to carry:
that God never assigned to them.
And the result?
Not because they don’t love…
…but because they’re carrying what was never theirs to carry.
The watchman had a role.
But he was not the savior of the city.
And this is where so many of us get into trouble.
We begin to function like:
But only God does that.
Only the Holy Spirit convicts, transforms, and renews hearts.
Not your effort.
Not your explaining.
Not your managing.
Not your emotional intensity.
This is where the dynamics become so clear through the lens of the Happy Kid Toolkit.
When we take on responsibility that isn’t ours, we tend to move into one of three roles:

Helpless Baby
“I can’t say anything… what if they get upset?”
So we stay silent.
Avoid truth.
Shrink back.
Bossy Helper
“I need to fix this.”
So we:
And become emotionally exhausted.
Blaming Bully
“Well, this is your fault.”
Truth without compassion.
Correction without humility.
The watchman reflects the posture of a Happy Kid, Caring Friend, and Respectful Leader.

This is the posture of maturity.
And it’s exactly how Jesus Christ lived.
Jesus told the truth.
He warned people.
He invited repentance.
But He never forced anyone to follow Him.
He allowed people to walk away.
One of the most powerful verses in this chapter is this:
“I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.” (Ezekiel 33:11)
This matters deeply.
Because many people view God as:
But this verse reveals something different.
God warns because He loves.
Just like a parent shouting:
“Stop! There’s a car coming!”
That’s not control.
That’s protection.
In our culture—and even in the church—we often confuse:
But biblical love tells the truth.
And biblical boundaries release control.
Another powerful theme in Ezekiel 33 is this:
God cares about your current direction.
Not just your past.
Not just your intentions.
Not just your identity.
Your direction.
A person moving toward:
is moving toward life.
A person moving toward:
is moving toward destruction.
Freedom begins when you recognize:
You are responsible for:
You are not responsible for:
If you’re reading this and feeling emotionally exhausted…
this may be why.
You’ve been carrying:
And your body feels it.
Your mind feels it.
Your relationships feel it.
But today, God is gently inviting you to release what was never yours to hold.
Take a few quiet moments and ask yourself:
What is God asking me to take responsibility for?
Am I carrying something that doesn’t belong to me?
Have I confused love with rescuing?
Where am I trying to control outcomes?
Do I avoid truth because I fear rejection?
What is God asking me to release?
This passage ultimately points us to the beauty of the gospel.
Jesus Christ came:
But to:
He tells the truth.
And He offers life.
