There’s something about standing in the water that slows everything down.
Not rushing.
Not striving.
Just… being present.
I was standing there, fly fishing—water gently moving around me, the sound of nothing but the river and the occasional cast. No noise. No pressure. No one watching.
Just me… and the quiet.
And I remember thinking how easy it is, in moments like that, to feel grounded.
To feel connected.
To feel still.
But then I had this thought…
👉 Why does it feel so much harder to live like this in my everyday life?
Why is it that I can slow down there…
…but then come home and:
And that’s what led into a question the Holy Spirit gently placed on my heart later that week…
There are moments when the Holy Spirit doesn’t come in loud or dramatic…
But quietly.
Gently.
Almost like a whisper you can’t ignore.
That’s what happened to me this week.
I woke up early, the house still quiet. The light was just beginning to come through the windows, and everything felt still. I sat there with my Bible, coffee in hand, expecting a normal morning with the Lord…
But instead, I felt this gentle conviction settle in.
Not heavy.
Not condemning.
Just clear.
And the question that rose up in my heart was this:
👉 If someone really watched my life… would they see Jesus?
Or would I look… just like the world?
Not on Sunday.
But Monday through Saturday.
This question isn’t rooted in pressure—it’s rooted in truth.
In Romans 12:2, we’re told:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
This isn’t about behavior modification.
It’s about transformation.
So the real question becomes:
👉 Is my mind being renewed… and is that renewal actually showing up in my life?
Because you can change behavior for a moment…
…but only God transforms the heart.
Jesus makes this even clearer in Matthew 7:16:
“You will recognize them by their fruits…”
Not perfection.
But pattern.
And that’s where this gets personal.
Because in 2 Corinthians 13:5, we’re told:
“Examine yourselves…”
Not compare.
Not perform.
👉 But to look honestly at our lives in the light of Christ.
Here’s what the Lord began to show me…
Two people can live the same life…
walk through the same situations…
face the same challenges…
…and have completely different inner postures.
Let’s look at some examples below:
💔 When You’re Hurt
Scenario: Someone says something that stings.
One person:
– replays it all day
– builds a case
– vents (gossips) to others to be validated
Another person:
feels the hurt
pauses
brings it to God first
asks, “What is mine to own?”
Same situation. Different spirit.
📖 Think about Joseph.
Betrayed. Sold. Falsely accused. Forgotten.
And yet, years later, he says:
“You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good…” — Genesis 50:20
That is a renewed mind in real life.
🏃♀️ When Life Feels Overwhelming
One person wakes up and immediately:
– scrolls
– rushes
– reacts
– lives from anxiety
Another pauses—even briefly—and says:
👉 “Lord, order my day.”
Same schedule. Different leadership.
📖 We see this in Mary and Martha.
Same home. Same Jesus.
But Martha is anxious and overwhelmed…
while Mary is present and anchored.
“You are anxious and troubled about many things…” — Luke 10:41
⚡ When You’re Triggered
One person:
– blames
– shuts down
– gets defensive
Another:
– repairs
– pauses
– owns their part
– stays engaged
📖 Think about David.
When confronted, he doesn’t defend himself.
He says:
“I have sinned against the Lord” — 2 Samuel 12:13
That’s not perfection. That’s a soft heart.
If you’ve ever thought:
👉 “Why do I keep reacting this way?”
You’re not alone.
Because under pressure…
We don’t rise to our intentions.
👉 We fall back into our patterns.
This is where I teach something called the Unhappy Kid Triangle.
It shows how we tend to operate when we’re not surrendered:
But when we walk with God, we shift into something different:
This part is sobering.
Because you can look like you’re doing all the right things…
…and still be rooted in the wrong place.
People-pleasing can look like love…
but be rooted in fear.
Control can look like leadership…
but be rooted in anxiety.
Avoidance can look like peace…
but be rooted in discomfort.
Performance can look like righteousness…
but be rooted in self.
But true fruit?
Galatians 5:22–23
It flows. It’s not forced. It’s produced by the Spirit.
And this is where everything shifted for me.
Because I realized…I can examine my life… and still miss Jesus.
It’s possible to:
…and still drift into performance.
But the truth is:
“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me…” — Galatians 2:20
This isn’t about becoming better. It’s about abiding deeper.
“Apart from Me you can do nothing…” — John 15:5
So the real question becomes:
👉 Am I staying close to Jesus… or just analyzing myself?
If you want to sit with this…
Here are a few questions to reflect on:
And maybe the deepest one:
👉 What is driving my life right now?
Fear?
Control?
Approval?
Or the Spirit?
The goal is not:
👉 “Do I look different from the world?”
The goal is:
👉 “Am I walking with Jesus?”
Because when you are…
You don’t have to force the difference.
It becomes evident.
